Strange book. It's written well at the sentence level, and it's good in terms of descriptions of family life, etc. Yet, I'm not sure what the author wanted to say. At the beginning, the main heroin seems to have it all, but she is mildly depressed because her life is not all roses. At the end, she REALLY has things to be depressed about. So what? What's the redeeming value of this novel? What do we learn from it? That tragedies are random? We all know that -- just listen to the radio or read a newspaper. A novel (in my book) has to have a MEANING, which is not present in this book. Very strange.
