This was Canada's best known children's book before Anne of Green Gables. Based on a true story this is a book told from the perspective of a dog that has been horribly mutilated and mistreated. It is similar to Black Beauty, but it being a true story makes it more moving. Still very relevant today and worth the time to read.

The first Canadian book to sell a million copies this is based on a true story of a cruel man who mutilates a dog told by the dog’s point of view. This book spurred the animal welfare movement in North America and a park in Meaford, Ontario is named after Beautiful Joe. It is a novel which inspired writers like L.M. Montgomery and is considered one of the finest works in Canadian fiction.
