Five years after the Civil War, Captain Kidd moves from town to town as a storyteller. In Texas, he crosses paths with Johanna, a ten-year-old taken in by the Kiowa people six years earlier. She is being returned to her biological aunt and uncle against her will. Kidd agrees to deliver the child where the law says she belongs. As they travel hundreds of miles, the two will face tremendous challenges of both human and natural forces as they search for a place that either can call home.

Tom Hanks is always great in roles that require a quiet strength of character. The story can be seen as a quest undertaken with reluctance by the protagonist. As such, he is placed in situations that reflect how people in Texas dealt with being on the losing side of the Civil War. The world is dangerous, beautiful, and confusing, so doing the right thing is not always obvious or safe.

Tom Hanks did a wonderful job in this movie, as did the young girl.Sorry I can't think of her name. The problem I had with this movie was them number of catastrophies that happened to them. That part was not based in reality. Sure they could have had some the adventures, but seriously it was just too much of a stretch for me. Some editor should have deleted a lot of scenes and had the director/writer lengthen some others.

Good entertainment, excellent acting by Tom Hanks and a fictional glimpse of 1870 Texas history. Some questionable changes from the novel, but nevertheless an intriguing storyline.

I was quite pleased with this film. There were parts that were wincing to watch, like the wagon accident for one, but the overall presentation was very well done. I was very impressed by Helena Zengel's performance and being paired up with Tom Hanks was an excellent move on those who chose her for the part. Very convincing acting by the whole cast, and I agree the scenery was awesome!

Tom Hanks is a wandering performance artist in 1870s Texas who reads the news and popular stories to townsfolks who either can't read or get their hands on a newspaper. On his travels he finds a young spitfire of a girl played brilliantly by Helena Zengal who was being returned to her German immigrant family after living with the Kiowa for many years by a government agent who is killed in an ambush. Tom Hanks takes her under his wing reluctantly at first and the rest of the film is an episodic travelogue of their roadtrip back to her family and their bonding as father and daughter. Tom Hanks is excellent as a former Confederate officer coming to terms with the new regime in Texas and his past life before the Civil War while trying to make a new one the best he can by moving forward. I liked the beginning and ending of the film but the middle section is a bit slow moving and comes across as two tv western episodes put together but if a viewer can be patient the payoff is worth it at the end.

Watchable, slow moving from point A to point B, with predictable ending. This role would fit Kevin Costner 100%.

Tom Hanks is always amazing!! Helena Zengel does an excellent job as a young girl who has grown up among the Kiowa and regards them as her family. I would have preferred a little less gun fire and more scenes between the two stars, but this film is still terrific!! Kristi & Abby Tabby

I thoroughly enjoyed the book News of the World by Paulette Jiles. The movie stars Tom Hanks. His character, Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd reads the news at various towns in Texas. He comes across a young girl who was orphaned and raised by a Kiowa family. The movie details their life as they travel across Texas post-Civil War to the family that she is to live with. The story demonstrates what home is.
