Based on the Vertigo comic book series from DC Entertainment, the mobster husbands of three 1978 Hell's Kitchen housewives are sent to prison by the FBI. Left with little but an ax to grind, the ladies take the Irish mafia's matters into their own hands, proving surprisingly adept at everything from running the rackets to taking out the competition, literally.

The advertised previews pretty horrendous...
Violence as expected from story, but not gratuitous.

Weellllll now, equal opportunity for women to become mobsters. A couple of funny scenes rapidly disappear as the women start to realize (too late) that organized crime doesn't ever let you go. When faced with their decision point, they choose the money and power path. Also, this is disappointingly violent: 2 of the 3 women are beaten (Melissa McCarthy's character just has to deal with 1970s sexism) and I'm not going to cheer them on when they move beyond self-protection and become just as violent and nasty as their husbands. If you're looking for violence, this is for you (there is an ironic, strategic twist at the end, but since it leads to heyyyy, more violence, it loses its punch).

Bloody gangster mob movie. Wont tell you what happens to the bodies after the killings in the bath tub, was too much for me. No way could these women escape the mob from by collecting their protection money from the shop keepers. Lost track of all the killings.

Fast paced and intense, three women vow to pick up where their husband's left off when they are sent to prison. The trio of ladies form their own mafia group in order to protect their territory and livelihood. There's a decent story here, but you'll have to sift through the strong language and blood to find it.

Elizabeth Moss, Melissa McCarthy, do a great job.
Tiffany Haddish is awful - like everything else she is in.
Great story line and plot - McCarthy is a badass!

Checked this out thinking maybe it would be like a dramedy with some dark humor or something. No, there is no comedy in this. The actresses have very good chemistry, and there were some good plot twists. Amazing soundtrack and costuming.

I was just getting tired of Melissa McCarthy's over-the-top comedy characters but she actually is quite appropriate for this role. Good chemistry with Elizabeth Moss and Tiffany Haddish making the whole movie quite good. I was skeptical at first but in the end, I enjoyed this movie. Good acting and directing. Won't spoil the movie for you so do watch it to form your own opinion.

This is a bloody, gritty mobster movie with plenty of violence and blood. I wish you could say this is just a well-done mobster movie with women playing the major roles, but somehow, it falls a little flat. I gave it 3.5 stars because there are definite moments of seeing the humanity of people who live this violent, corrupt mobster life. The movie shines the most in those moments. As you listen to the making-of special feature, you realize how this film was really a feminist manifesto - that, unfortunately for the art end-product - the focus was on putting women in every possible behind the scenes role and so forth. It seems perhaps some of the potential in the film was lost because the focus was not on the best film, but on making a feminist manifesto. A weakness for the cast is having Tiffany Haddish and Melissa McCarthy being two of the three main leads. They are pretty good actors, but that means the best they got out of them are pretty good performances. The sum total of it all was 3.5/5.0 for me. While the 23% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes seems a bit harsh, the 69% audience sees pretty spot on. If you enjoy bloody, violent, brutal mobster movies with swearing in them, there are better films, but this might be worth your time.
