This novella uses Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" to tell the story of Taylor McClellan's return home from war in 2010. His diagnosis of PTSD and his father's unemployment only deepen the family's despair. As Taylor, with the help of Thor, a service dog, struggles to regain his footing, the rest of the family struggles with a Taylor they don't know as well as bleak economic conditions. When Miller, the 10-year-old younger son, disappears, the family faces a crisis that will either break the family or start the healing process. Although the author tried to set the stage with a prologue set five years after that fateful Christmas, the timeline seemed too compressed for me. I just couldn't believe that a PTSD veteran would rally after a mere six weeks at home. On the other hand, alternating Dickens' story with Monroe's does illustrate the "miracle can happen at Christmas" sub-text.
