Based on a real-life incident, this gripping novel tells the story of the guard dogs left behind at an abandoned prison camp in the Siberian gulag. Told from the view point of Ruslan, the main dog, this is not your typical feel good dog story.

Short read, reputedly inspired by a real incident, about a highly-trained guard dog from a Soviet labor camp. When the camp is shut down, the dogs are set loose and abandoned, but they don't understand that their work is over and continue to try to do their duty, waiting for a train to come with new prisoners for them to guard. It's interesting to see how the dog Ruslan understands (and misunderstands) the events around him, and heart-rending to see how his loyal adherence to his lifelong training threatens his chances at a happier life.
Sad but not as bleak as many books from/about this period, the story can be taken either at face value as a 'dog story' or as a critique of human obedience to authority.
