Caleb Carr has passed the "write like Conan Doyle" exercise. Holmes and Dr Watson -- as well as the descriptive passages -- sound like Conan Doyle had written them. I'd agree with the earlier comment that the plot isn't as strong as the original author's machinations, but it's still a ripping yarn. I did feel like there is a bit of a plot hole at the end. The reader is excellent and all the characters are very distinct.

I've been a fan of Sherlock Holmes stories for many years but am unimpressed by the recent spate of 'copycat' Holmes stories. This one is a cut above the usual, however. It's misty and atmospheric, set about 1895, and the reader does an excellent job of bringing it all to life.

The story line is a bit thin and of course 'The Italian Secretary' isn't in the same league as 'A Study in Scarlet', but overall it's pretty good--the best 'copycat' Holmes I've yet come across.
