Add a CommentDo you ever look back and say “Man, I can’t believe I did that!” or “What was I thinking?” Well, “Mean Creek” is about decision-making and consequences. I believe this film does a wonderful job at conveying the angst of being a teenager and showing how lives can change forever in a blink of an eye.
A well done film, reminiscent of (as the dvd cover description so aptly suggests) "Deliverance", "River's Edge", and even "Stand By Me". The young and sensitive Sam's conscience gets the better of him; opting for the higher road after planning his revenge on the bully George. But George doesn't make forgiveness easy. The moral of the story in a nutshell: Hurt people hurt people.
THIS MOVIE IS GREAT I RECOMMEND EVERY PERSON WATCH THIS A LEAST ONCE.
Writer/director Jacob Aaron Estes put together a subtle and potent film with such a modest budget. This film shows how film making can be heightened with moments of silence -- showing emotion rather than speaking dialogue.
It's beautifully shot and edited by the crew. It's well acted by such a young cast. And the story is well crafted; While the antagonist is a bully, the viewer vacillates between hating him and feeling sorry for him. Through his video camera we also glimpses of the roots of his bullying but the twist is that the protagonists are the real windows into the cyclical nature of violence. It's the choices people make and the insights into their own feelings that make or break a person.
This movie is filled with suspense because we all know what's going to go wrong but it's also moving and inspiring. It's a well produced movie made with a minimal budget. A great movie all-round.
Interesting topic that shows how sometimes children can be very cruel and will not understand the consequences of their actions.
