The story telling was innovating and compelling, including other characters point of view, and even using quotations from the main character's (Yuri) own journal. The descriptions of the characters and the surroundings are brilliantly crafted. My most memorable image is how he described the wolves at night as a menacing force like his adversaries closing in on him. Another is when Yuri encounters Lara at a library in a small town, how he describes his feelings about her revealing his uncontrollable infatuation with her beauty.

Love, loss, betrayal, war, family drama - this story has it all. A sprawling, epic tale that encompasses the best and worst of human behaviour, set in the time of the Russian revolution. Unforgettable!

The wind swept the snow aside, ever faster and thicker, as if it were trying to catch up with something, and Yurii Andreievich stared ahead of him out of the window, as if he were not looking at the snow but were still reading Tonia’s letter and as if what flickered past him were not small dry snow crystals but the spaces between the small black letters, white, white, endless, endless.
