Charis of Ephesus is not your typical 4th century maiden: her goal in life is to study medicine. Unfortunately, this is not an option. But when forced to flee the machinations of the new governor, Charis travels to Alexandria, disguising herself as a eunuch. Even so, no one is willing to take her as a pupil, except a Jewish doctor with sympathy for outcasts. As Charis becomes part of his family, she fashions for herself a hard but rewarding life. As her reputation grows, she is pulled into the political and religious strife of Alexandria when she becomes physician to Bishop Athanasius. But while she is building a life for herself, the foundation of lies on which it is founded it are crumbling, threatening to destroy everything she has worked for. From the high society of Ephesus, to the erudite traditions of Alexandria, and finally the untamed edges of the empire, this historical fiction is well worth the read.
