This novel portrays an fading aristocratic family in post WW II Italy. The daughter marries a doctor from a working class southern family. The book evokes the films and literature of the 1950s. Fitzgerald's cameo of Gramsci strikes a very false note. She shows no real understanding of him and his importance. The book could be said to be about happiness.
