I am an avid reader and actually read this book many years ago. It is slow getting going but once you get past that it takes you on an unforgettable journey. You will laugh and cry, be happy and angry but I think that makes it so unforgettable. I noticed others complaining about too much detail. Those details are the key components to getting you so immersed that you feel yourself going on this life journey step by step, through good times and bad. This author has a way of pulling you in to his stories so completely that you feel the heartbreak, the loneliness, the joy and wonder that his character feels. It is the closest that any author I have come across has come to making you walk a mile in their(the characters) shoes. Except it is not just a mile he takes you along for the whole ride. I am sorry the other comments have spoiled the book by pointing you to the end but if you read every page front to back(not skip ahead) you will realize it was the entire journey that makes this such a great tale and this man such a great author. If you love this book be sure to try some of his others they will also pull you in to walk in their shoes. This one however is still my favorite. Enjoy. :-)

I love this book. it has to be one of my all time favorites. although it does has way to much detail, its necessary to bring the story to life. I found this book at a second hand store thought it would be a good read and ended up being one of my favorite books. I don't reread bookd but this one is the first book I would enjoy reading over and over again.... I do recommend this to any fan of historical fiction...some parts made me want to put it down but ultimately I couldnt

This book is very long and in too much detail. The travels of Dark Cloud started sounding the same after about 15 of them. The author went into enormous detail and it just became too much for me.

It is a good story and I am guessing it had alot of historical facts and passed down stories in it.

I made it to the last 100 pages and then read the last chapter as I knew how it would end and didn't need any more detail.

It is not a difficult read, but you do need to give yourself alot of time.

Recommended by a friend. Looking forward to reading it. I noticed there are 2 comments on the other edition of this book, and both highly recommend it as well! Mar 1 2012...picked this up at the library today....started it in the evening....looks pretty daunting...will need my readers, fairly small print. March 2, 35....still a little told it will take off. March 3 2012....11:00 am, page 65...starting to take off. March 8, 2012...Page 312....blood, guts, sex, war, travel, blood, guts, sex, aztec culture, friendship/slavery, deception, travel.....still reading......March 16, 2012, well I'm on page 664...nearing the end and kind of sad about that, so I guess that means that i'm enjoying it! I find it got more into the characters in the second half, which made it more endearing. The first part was necessary for the set-up though, and I am considering reading it again from the beginning....some things that happened or were described in the beginning, came back with a bang in the end. I believe there is a sequel...definitely going to check it out! March 18, 2012 ....finished!......I will be reading this again, but I think I'll check out the sequel first.

Incredible story!! Must read to find out how EPIC this book is!!

Mixtli's tale of his homeland from the way he saw it, not the one written in our history books, has been visually imprinted in my mind. It's slow at first, but once you get going, you don't want to put the book down. I have to say that at the end of the book, I was sad to part ways with Mixtli. THAT'S WHEN YOU KNOW IT'S AN AMAZING BOOK!! :)

WOW - this is an epic read over 750 know you are in for a long haul. The main character is Mixtli/Dark Cloud who shares his life story in a format of letters to the King of Spain. It was an interesting take on how the story unfolds, though be forewarned that there are scenes of human sacrifices in ceremonies and one relationship of incest that one can turned be off. Found lots of details on the Aztec culture, architecture and foods. Enjoyed reading the story was sad to see how the story ended.
