I really hated not finishing this because for the most part I really liked it. I just hated that it took sooo long to get even halfway through. The storyline is really cute although I hated the way Anne was treated by Marilla up to page 148 (I haven't read past that). Right now I have a million other books to read and this one just dragged for me. It's probably my mindset since I have a lot going on at the moment, but I would like to see the movie (or a movie version) and perhaps try reading this again in the future. If you have the time an the patience, it's a great book.

Anne of Green Gables, by L.M. Montgomery, is a story that follows Anne Shirley, an orphan, and how she was adopted by Marilla and Matthew Cubert. The book takes place in Canada on Prince Edward Island. After a mix up with the adoption center, the Cuberts find that instead of a boy that can help with the yardwork, a young girl is sent to them. After meeting Anne, they decide to keep her, despite expecting a boy. Anne is a girl with a huge imagination. She talks a lot and likes to use big words, but from reading the story you can see that Anne is smart and caring.

I read this book in fifth grade, and I really enjoyed it! I liked the characters and the development of Anne throughout the story. Anne had a huge imagination, just as I did when I was young, which made her very relatable to me. I also liked how despite the terrible circumstances that Anne may be in, she always tried to keep her head high. For example, instead of becoming upset from not getting the puffed sleeves that she wanted, she didn’t allow it to make her upset. She used her imagination to keep her spirits high, which is something I admire about her.

Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery is a classic children’s novel. The book depicts the story of a young girl with fiery red hair and a temper to match and her arrival at Green Gables. The creative and ingenious protagonist Anne Shirley goes through various adventures and dilemmas, each proving her as a heroic and brave individual to her friends, peers, and new family, the Cuthberts. Anne’s story remains an all-time favorite among children since 1908, and the lovable Anne is one of the most unforgettable.

I LOVE this book series. It's filled with tragedy, good morals, and a strong female character. Anne is an orphan who's life has been filled with one bad luck after another when she is mistakenly taken in by siblings Mathew and Marilla her life begins to take a brighter path. Follow along with Anne's great adventures as she struggles with her new life. 14+

Though Anne of Green Gables is generally considered a children's or young adult book, I didn't discover it until my twenties - I loved it then and I still love it now, over 20 years later. The author works magic as she weaves this tale of an unloved & lonely orphan's accidental adoption by a brother and sister who never imagined their lives could be so enriched by a little girl. She makes me laugh and cry and think and rejoice as I read about the adventures and misadventures of Anne and the reactions of those around her. Not only does Anne grow, but her guardians, Matthew and Marilla, grow in beautiful and unexpected ways. It is a beautiful story of the power of love, truth, forgiveness, humility, and imagination, and it never grows stale.

I first read this story at the age of 11 on a trip to Prince Edward Island and fell in love with the story and the main character. Nearly forty years later, it still has a hold on me and it's the tale that's worth the five stars. This time around I read the Sterling Publishing edition. It features illustrations of Anne at various points in her life, in a medium called scratchboard (which is described in the endnotes and is quite innovative). They are very pleasant, but my beef is the artists, husband and wife set designers for Broadway, chose to use the same painting for a series of chapters, rather than one for each of the 38. It might have added more to the experience.

This classic story captures my heart from the very first page. I admire Anne Shirley’s curious mind and determined attitude. Anne’s message is one we can all learn from: be true to yourself!

Anne of Green Gables by Lucy M. Montgomery has captured the heart of an 11 year old girl like no one I’ve ever read before. Her writing style is clear and descriptive. I found myself laughing out loud so many times. Anne and all the characters grow noticeably in the story. Anne has a never ending imagination and a very strong sense of loyalty. This story is filled with love, loyalty and faith.

I would recommend the story for adults, young adults and juvenile readers it is also a perfect read a loud to share with your children.

I supplemented reading with the audio on the Libby app, particularly the version read by Laurie Klein. Ms. Klein did a very nice job with the voices.
I look forward to reading more of this series.

I'm not sure how, but I missed reading this as a child, and I'm very sorry I did. I think the best way to describe this novel is like a warm, cozy blanket. Anne of Green Gables takes us back to a time and place when picnics were the highlight of the summer, and children would spend hours picking flowers and playing by streams and using their imaginations. Where the simple joys were the best, and life was fulfilled for the grown ups by hard work, gossip and going to town. Anne comes to Green Gables on Prince Edward Island in Nova Scotia in the late 1800's quite by accident, and bewitches everyone she meets with her optimism, her joy, her clumsiness and her daydreams. The novel itself takes place over about 5 years- from the time Anne is 11 until she is 16. She goes to school and plays with her best friend Diana, makes plenty of mistakes, and just charms the pants off of her adults, a brother and sister named Marilla and Matthew.
I absolutely enjoyed myself reading about Anne and a simpler way of life. It certainly makes me want to visit Prince Edward Island- and I can definitely see myself continuing with the series.

I can hardly believe I never read this book growing up! I absolutely loved reading about quirky, charismatic, and wholly unique Anne Shirley. Montgomery was an incredibly talented author with as much imagination and artistic style as our Anne. The story of an eleven-year old orphan who finds an unexpected home in the least likely of places, Anne of Green Gables is the first in a series. Everyone should read this delightful book - I can't wait to continue the series, although I am cautious about the sequels remaining quite as good as the first!

Love it! My sister hates it! It's just amazing!

Note to self: remember where you left off in the series and continue!
Second note to self: ask mom if the TV series is any good!

I loved reading Anne of Green Gables! Anne is my favourite character because I like the fact, she is able to laugh and learn from her mistakes and move on. . She was eleven years old when she came to Green Gables and from then she has been such a chatterbox with a vivid imagination. I am not complaining though, it made the storyline much more interesting. As I was reading this novel, I felt as if the characters were real, I could not put the book down. The way Anne thinks so highly of friendship is admirable. I think this book is suitable for everyone that has a heart. @grumpykat of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library

Anne of Green Gables is a story about an imaginative orphan girl named Anne Shirley, who dreams of one day being adopted to a family. Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, two unmarried siblings, want to adopt a boy to help them manage their farm at Green Gables. One mixed-up message later, Anne finds herself at Green Gables. Marilla is hesitant to let her stay at first, since they originally wanted a boy, and seeing that Anne is not an ordinary child - she has a huge imagination that sometimes gets away from her. But, they decide to keep her! This story is one of my personal favourites of all time, and it still brings me all the laughs it gave me the first time I read it. Anne is a great lead; she is very captivating since she has a very passionate and lively nature, and her temper - though it can get her into trouble - caused more than one entertaining scene! I would recommend this book to anyone age 10+, because it is a fun and enjoyable read. However, it's lengthy and may be challenging to a younger reader. -@batontwirler385 of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library

I flew through this book! It was very engaging and easy to read, with interesting characters and an eventful storyline. Anne is prone to mistakes, speaks her mind, and has the most lively imagination, which makes her a great main character in this book. Throughout the novel, as you watch Anne grow, you see her character develop and mature, which makes the book feel much more personal. I loved being able to picture the settings, through Anne's detailed descriptions of her lively imagination. There are many funny moments in the book as well, with Anne learning lessons the hard way, or simply being herself. I would definitely recommend this book! @PenelopeScriptor of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library

A sweet, classic tale with a fiery heroine that I love and always will love. There is hardly any romance, but in the following instalments… Anne ❤️ Gilbert Blythe.
One age suitability note: technically anyone 6+ could read this, but probably only tweens and teens would find it interesting.
